Eight Lies Of A Mother

Tags

This story begins when I was a child: I was born poor. Often we hadn’t enough to eat. Whenever we had some food, Mother often gave me her portion of rice. While she was transferring her rice into my bowl, she would say, “Eat this rice, son, I’m not hungry.”

This was Mother’s First Lie.

As I grew, Mother gave up her spare time to fish in a river near our house; she hoped that from the fish she caught, she could give me a little bit more nutritious food for my growth. Once she had caught just two fish, she would make fish soup. While I was eating the soup, mother would sit beside me and eat what was still left on the bone of the fish I had eaten; my heart was touched when I saw it. Once I gave the other fish to her on my chopstick but she immediately refused it and said, “Eat this fish son, I don’t really like fish.”

This was Mother’s Second Lie.

Then, in order to fund my education, Mother went to a Match Factory to bring home some used matchboxes, which she filled with fresh matchsticks. This helped her get some money to cover our needs. One wintry night I awoke to find Mother filling the matchboxes by candlelight. So I said, “Mother, go to sleep; it’s late: you can continue working tomorrow morning.” Mother smiled and said, “Go to sleep son, I’m not tired.”

This was Mother’s Third Lie.

When I had to sit my Final Examination, Mother accompanied me. After dawn, Mother waited for me for hours in the heat of the sun. When the bell rang, I ran to meet her… Mother embraced me and poured me a glass of tea that she had prepared in a thermos. The tea was not as strong as my Mother’s love. Seeing Mother covered with perspiration, I at once gave her my glass and asked her to drink too. Mother said, “Drink son, I’m not thirsty!”

This was Mother’s Fourth Lie.

After Father’s death, Mother had to play the role of a single parent. She held on to her former job; she had to fund our needs alone. Our family’s life was more complicated. We suffered from starvation. Seeing our family’s condition worsening, my kind Uncle, who lived near my house, came to help us solve our problems big and small. Our other neighbors saw that we were poverty stricken so they often advised my mother to marry again. But Mother refused to remarry saying, “I don’t need love.”

This was Mother’s Fifth Lie.

After I had finished my studies and got a job, it was time for my old Mother to retire but she carried on going to the market every morning just to sell a few vegetables. I kept sending her money but she was steadfast and even sent the money back to me. She said, “I have enough money.”

That was Mother’s Sixth Lie.

I continued my part-time studies for my Master’s Degree. Funded by the American Corporation for which I worked, I succeeded in my studies. With a big jump in my salary, I decided to bring Mother to enjoy life in America but Mother didn’t want to bother her son. She said to me, “I’m not used to high living.”

That was Mother’s Seventh Lie.

In her dotage, Mother was attacked by cancer and had to be hospitalized. Now living far across the ocean, I went home to visit Mother who was bedridden after an operation. Mother tried to smile but I was heartbroken because she was so thin and feeble but Mother said, “Don’t cry son, I’m not in pain.”

That was Mother’s Eighth Lie.

Telling me this eighth lie, she died.
YES, MOTHER WAS AN ANGEL!

M – O – T – H – E – R

“M” is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of gold,
“E” is for her eyes with love-light shining in them,
“R” means right , and right she’ll always be,

Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER”

… a word that means the world to me.

Snake for 2012 (Chinese Horoscope

Tags

, , , , , ,

If your birthday is before February 4, then your astrological sign is Dragon, not Snake. (Verify Your Sign)

Snake is also called little Dragon. It is said that a Dragon on the ground becomes Snake, and a big flying Snake becomes Dragon. So Dragon is the Happy Star to Snake. Most of time, Dragon travels alone, so Dragon is also the Lonely Star to Snake. In general, Snake people should have good luck in the Dragon year. In Chinese astrology, Dragon contains mainly Earth. Snake contains mainly Fire. Fire can produce Earth. That means Snake becomes weak when Dragon is around. 2012 is a year for Dragon to show itself off. Snake people need to act as a supporting character. Otherwise, Snake people might humiliate themselves .

Career: The career luck in 2012 is fair for Snake people, because there is no significant good lucky sign in the career area. Aside from performing your job duty well, Snake people need the attitude to help out their company or coworkers in problem solving, workload reduction, and business development. You might have to spend extra effort and time, but you will earn the credit and an unexpected good return in the Dragon Year. Building good people relationships is also important in the 2012 to prevent from being pushed into a corner at the office. Also, when managing business, you need to follow the law and do your own duty properly to avoid argument, dispute or lawsuit.

Money: Snake people’s money luck in fine in the year of Dragon, but money will come and go. Good money management is required for Snake people in order to increase wealth. Snake people cannot be too greedy when money comes easily. You may be deceived when you are playing risky games or investment. Therefore, if you earn the good profit from the investment, you still need to think twice before re-investment.

Love: There is no Romantic Star coming to Snake people in 2012, but the Happy Star can bring you good mood in your social life. You will have the chance to enjoy friendships, however, because of theLonely Star, it’s hard for Snake people to result in a good love relationship. If you are in love, then you don’t have to push for a deeper and closer relationship in the year of Dragon.

Health: There is no major issues in the health area in 2012, but the Dragon year still has a sign of sickness. Somehow, Snake people will lose the energy easily this year. So Snake people should reserve more time for rest and relax after work. Proper outdoor excise will help maintain your health. Paying attention to food safety and sanitation can avoid issues regarding the intestines and stomach.

An ignored email by Mar Roxas and LRT

This was the email that I sent regarding the use of the LED TVs and yes no one replied.

20120112-080302.jpg

Hi,

Since almost all the stations have now several LCD screens installed on the platform areas and are now showing several advertisements to the public which obviously generates extra revenue. It’s a good step for our transit industry to follow the vision of leading transport system in SEA which in this case is Singapore. Please take time to watch the video on the link I pasted below:

This video is continiously playing on all the LCD screens at all MRT stations in Singapore. Yes, they have advertisements which are good for business purposes but almost 70% of the time, the video above is being played. Why? Because they think that passengers’ safety is more important than revenues generating from advertisements. And I ultimately agree to that principle. Security and Safety has long been the number one challenge our transport system is facing, and I guess having this kind of video playing on the screens in each station will help the public be aware of the danger we might face if we ourselves are not vigilant.

Thank you.

Useless LED TVs on LRT and MRT

Most Filipinos do not own a car simply because most of them cannot afford to buy one, cannot be approved for a car loan due to their economic status, and some of them just left the idea of owning a car in their dreams. Having said that, public transportation is a big role to every Filipino, almost all Filipinos have experienced riding a jeepney, tricycle, pedicab, bus, shuttle and the MRT/LRT. These modes of public transportation help the common man to go on their daily lives. But let me just focus on one, the train system in Metro Manila or what we all call, the MRT and the LRT. The Manila LRT is the first metro rail transit system in SouthEast Asia, older by three years than Singapore MRT. It has been one of the major achievements of the Marcos Administration giving the public a new way of transportation within Metro Manila, fast and hassle-free. Fast forward today, we now have 3 major train lines; the Yellow Line which is the oldest (opened in 1984) now has 22 stations, the Purple Line (opened in 2003) with 11 stations and the MRT (opened in 1999) with 13 stations. These 3 train lines are somewhat connected to each other but not totally linked efficiently like the Singapore MRT and SBS Transit systems inSingapore.

As an everyday commuter, I ride the purple line almost 4 times a week and I can’t help but to compare our train system toSingapore’s train system (having been there several times). One is LRT/MRT ticketing system, if you ride the yellow line and need to alight at a station in the purple line, you need to buy 2 tickets, one for the yellow line and another for the purple line. And yes, you cannot buy the tickets at the same time. So you need to buy before boarding the yellow line and you need to buy another one before boarding the purple line, and you have to do it again going back. Imagine how hassle it can be, not unless you want to buy a stored-value ticket worth P100 to avoid the inconvenience, but you have to buy 3 of those, each per train line. If only our government can upgrade our ticketing system just like in Singapore’s SMRT/SBS transit wherein you can buy one ticket and you can use it in any train line (Singapore has 5 lines, 134 stations linked altogether throughout the entire city), less hassle, less time and energy, not to mention how fast their trains are.

Other issues are the trains, there are trains that I think are older than me that are still being used, LRT/MRT officers, security, cleanliness, elevators and escalators and the list goes on and on. But one thing that I want to focus on is how the LRT and MRT use their LED TVs for business and not for benefit of the public. There are around 8 to 10 LED TVs in each station showing commercial products advertisements. When I first noticed the TV, I spent time watching all the ads because I thought after 4 ads, there will be an information video about the security measures the LRT/MRT is doing and what they are expecting for the public to do as well to prevent what had happened last 2000 (Rizal Day Bombing), I was expecting something like this:

But after watching all the ads, the only information video I saw was on how to do business with them by placing ads on those LED TVs. Frustrated, after I got home, I sent an email to LRT, MRT and to the DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas suggesting to use those TVs for the benefit of the public. Surprisingly, no one replied.

I am not against placing advertisements on those TVs, what I want is to use that media to inform the public of different security measure everyone can do to prevent such cases from happening just like in Singapore. Sure, place 4 advertisements but after that make sure that we have this info video which will make the public realize that everyone should be vigilant.

My apologies from some grammatical errors, did not proof-read. Just ranting. LOL

There’s No Place like “Maynila La Imelda”

Livin La Vida Imelda

I’m not really into writing stuff but let me give this a try to express my gratitude for this man who will tell and teach you how to look at Manila differently.

I have been a fan of Carlos ever since I saw him the first time inside the walls of Intramuros when I and my college friends were strolling around 4 years ago. He was in front of a group of foreigners, pointing his fingers to some historical structures and narrating some stuff as if he’s the spokesperson, it seemed fun because of his jolly aura which is very perfect in presentations. His tiny speaker hanging around his belt makes his voice vivacious which adds up to the energy of his audience. Back then, I was just a mere observer on how he does his tour and a person in the background who wished to be part of it in the future.

Fast forward, 4 years later. Being a Twitter follower of @CarlosCeldran I got a chance of taking advantage of his generosity by having Barter Tours. Given that as of this writing I don’t have the capacity to pay the tour fee, I requested two slots for the Barter Tour for me and my friend which gladly he confirmed.

So me and my friend brought our gifts for him in exchange of joining his tour for free yesterday (October 21, 2011| 14:00). The tour that we joined in was titled: “Livin La Vida Imelda”, it’s all about the former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Romualdez Marcos, he shared some bits of her biography, tiny drops of romance here and there, her grand ambitions for Manila, her achievements and the best part, the spicy gossips about herself, her husband, her insurmountable pairs of shoes, and the undying controversies behind all the structures that was built during her reign as the “Steel Butterfly”.

The tour lasted for about 2 ½ hours. I totally enjoyed how Carlos presented it in a way that his audience literally pays attention to any word that he utters. With him is a folder with mostly pictures that I have not yet seen on Google, which serves as his secondary presentation tool next to his tiny speaker.  A portable CD/Cassette player which is really my favorite because as we “Walk this Way” (transferring to another spot inside the CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines)  and PICC (Philippine International Convention Center)) he will play the 1970’s music which was dubbed as the “Manila Sound”, since my parents have not thought of having me yet in this world during that time, I can honestly say that I am familiar with VST & Co. songs like “Disco Fever”, “Magsayawan” and “Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko”. (PS: as I’ve said I was not yet born when those songs were played over the radio, but I thank my parents for having and keeping these records at home, thanks also to YouTube. LOL). For the record, Carlos was not playing these songs from a CD, he literally used cassette tapes that I find really really cool! The best part of the presentation was when he mimics the way Imelda Marcos speaks while throwing some really funny lines and yes this was partnered by Imelda’s signature of having a hankie, in this case, if my observation was correct, Carlos used the Black Nazarene of Quiapo handkerchief. And of course, who can forget his black hat that surely fits his round head. =)

Cultural Center of the Philippines

The entire tour was very educational and entertaining. I really learned a lot and there’s really some “Ah-a” moments. For a guy who really did not witness howManilawas so impressive and famous back in those days, I was really amused and surprised about the things that I saw and heard. And given the main subject of the tour, Imelda Marcos, it just made me really fascinated to know more about her. I clearly remember my late Dad who happened to be an architect once said that he was very fond of Imelda because of her great sense and appreciation in beautiful and grand architecture.

Of course in every story, it can never always be just happy times; you cannot be at the pedestal forever. The dark side of the “Steel Butterfly” was also exposed which I am sure will give you some “Oh? Really?” moments, and did I also say about some conspiracy theories about the People Power and Ninoy Aquino’s assassination? Interesting, interesting stuff. Yes, these were all covered. Although not very detailed but the idea will keep you inclined to the stories. I almost forgot, Carlos also dropped some well-known and who-is-that-again names that Google cannot tell you. (Idk, I haven’t checked but for sure there were some names that surprised me.)

The controversial ghost-inhabited Manila Film Center

Oh well, after the tour I just observed one thing. Carlos did not give us the opportunity to ask questions which I thought an important part in presentations. Lack of time perhaps? However, I realized that there’s no need to ask questions because I haven’t thought of asking anything during the tour which only means that he pretty covered if not all, most of it. And yes, we are not in a classroom setting where there’s recitation and stuff after all.

So, if you guys want to be part and enjoy it the same way I did, contact him now. I’m sure you will not regret it.

Here’s a snippet of the Livin La Vida Imelda Tour when an Al Jazeera correspondent joined and featured Carlos Celdran:

Thanks for reading!

@NJayMaldito

From another man’s suggestion: The experience will be the “bestest” (if there’s such a word) had Carlos gave away some souvenirs as a token of appreciation too. (Like a key-chain with the image of his hat or whatever just to remember that you were once a part of his journey.)

Friendship over women’s welfare

Tags

So I was checking my twitter timeline and I read something about a congressman not voting in favor of RH Bill due to a request of his friend who’s an Anti-RH Bill congressman.

After I read this: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/15962/osmena-no-need-to-pass-rh-bill-now

I honestly went, “for real?! WTF!”

This congressman who’s supposed to know BETTER for the nation blatantly said that he cannot vote. Clearly and stupidly his friendship with that congressman is way valuable than the women’s welfare (which is the main beneficiaries of the bill) and the development of the nation.

Isn’t it frustrating that during the election campaign period, these politicians usually shouts all the things that are really lovely to our ears? But once they’re officially elected they can say or do whatever they want that benefits them personally and not people who’s put them in the office. Yes it is totally UNFAIR.

Our mothers are many times the unsung heroes of our lives. Whether it’s their endless encouragement or the example they set, our moms are crucial to every part of our lives and seldom ask for anything in return. It’s time we let mom know we appreciate all the things she has done for us.

A train hits a bus load of Catholic school girls and they all perish. At the gates of heaven, St. Peter asks the girls whether they have ever had any contact with a penis…
The first girl giggles and says she once touched the tip of one with her finger. Peter asks the girl to dip the finger into the holy water.

The next girl says she once fondled one, so sticks her hand in the holy water.

Suddenly there is a commotion and one girl pushes to the front.

‘Mary, what’s the rush?’ asks Peter.

She replies ‘I want to gargle that holy water before Kathy sticks her ass in it. ‘

Snake for 2011

The Snake

Intelligent and highly intuitive are two of the Snake’s many fine qualities. He makes an amusing and romantic friend with a definite flirtatious streak. When challenged or criticized he can be a sore loser. The Snake is very lucky with money and is fond of the odd bet or two. He is quick-witted and enjoys reading, music and occasionally the paranormal side of life.

Forecast for 2011 Snakes like to have plans and follow their itinerary in an orderly fashion – 2010 threw all this out the window! The Chinese Year of the Rabbit will be a much more appealing year to the Snake and he will feel back on track, albeit still busy and full of activity. The focus of 2011 for the Snake will be to make sure he is doing something he likes, something that allows him to express his creativity and talents and something that he excels at

. February, March and October will provide windows of opportunities in his career to achieve this. However, he must put in the effort and make his intentions known, or the windows may close again. Financially, things are looking much brighter for the Snake and with planning and saving, this will be an excellent year. Home decorating and refurbishments are highlighted this year and time at home with family and friends will be treasured. Romance and friendship will be superb in 2011 and he will get much enjoyment from social gatherings, especially ones connected with work. A word of warning for all Snakes – there is the possibility of a lapse in judgement or a piece of harmful gossip – this could lead to awkwardness. Tread carefully! Healthwise, Snakes should take care to have a balanced lifestyle or their energy could suffer.

***Spoiler FREE***

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in one scene at their Hotel room in Venice.

I’ve been waiting for this movie since December. Finally, its screening opened today! Of course, I watched it.

How much lovely Paris and Venice can be if you will see the most elegant gorgeous woman walking on its streets, Angelina Jolie. I love the first several scenes where the camera just follows Angelina while walking, her stance, her stare, her elegant gestures and I should say, her EYES & LIPS. Then, you will have the impression that this movie is more of like a game, a cat and dog chasing the cheese of a mouse between Angelina Jolie who plays Elise, Johnny Depp who plays (I would rather not disclose this *SPOILER*) and the cops.

It is not much like of an action-suspense-romance film but it’s more of like that, somehow. LOL Story starts with Angelina being chased by the police because she’s the only contact person of this man who stole lotsa lotsa money. Angelina receives these letters giving her instructions where to go and how to mislead the cops. (You gotta watch it how Angelina plays like this effortlessly.)

Over-all, the movie got lots of twists in the story and how it was twisted is the BEST. Do not expect some huge explosion and car bombings and all because again this is NOT an action film. The only thing that will keep you watching it is when you keep on asking yourself “Who the hell is Alexander Pierce?” “Who the hell sends the letter?” “Oh, that might be him…” and all those cliff-hanging ideas or assumptions in your mind. There’s no BED scene too because this is NOT Angelina Jolie’s “Original Sin” movie. No, she did not show her butt.

About Johnny and Angie’s chemistry, I must admit they lack on that corner. Although Johnny and Angie are at no doubt very brilliant actors that they can portray any role, there is still something missing between the two of them when they’re in one scene.

Above all, the end part was awesomely the best. I have not thought that it would end like that. And, I’m sure if you will think about the end part deeply, you’ll know what the  real message of the movie is all about.

Yes I did and I believe in that.

*hugs Angelina’s wax figure* LOL

I will have a full-movie review with specific details once the movie is off theaters.
